The Rules Have Changed. Your Standards Haven’t.
Menopause deserves a fuller conversation. Your oral health belongs in it.
You know the shade of lipstick that works. The earrings you reach for when you want to feel especially yourself. The small rituals that make a busy morning feel a little more considered.
Then something shifts. Your mouth feels unusually dry. A familiar food tastes different. Brushing becomes a moment when you notice a change you cannot quite explain. Menopause may be part of that conversation. It should also be a reason to ask questions and expect thoughtful answers.
For World Menopause Day on October 18, we’re making room for the part of the conversation that happens at the bathroom mirror.
Pay attention to what feels different
Hormonal changes around menopause can affect the mouth, teeth and gums. Dry mouth and a higher risk of cavities are more common after menopause, but every woman’s experience is different. A change in your mouth deserves attention even when it seems small.
Saliva does quiet, essential work: it helps wash away food, supports swallowing and brings minerals to the teeth. Persistent dryness can make everyday activities uncomfortable and increase the risk of tooth decay. Medicines and other health conditions can also contribute, so the cause should be assessed rather than assumed.
Pain deserves a proper conversation
This year’s International Menopause Society theme is Chronic Pain at Midlife. It is a useful reminder to take persistent discomfort seriously, including discomfort in the mouth.
Burning mouth syndrome is more common in women, especially after menopause. It can involve burning, tingling or an altered sense of taste. But a burning sensation can have several causes; describing the feeling is the start of an assessment, not a diagnosis. Ask your dentist about ongoing burning, dryness, soreness or unexplained changes in taste.
Bring specifics to the appointment: when the change started, whether it comes and goes, what seems to trigger it, and which medicines or supplements you take. Those details help your dental team understand what needs investigating.
Give your daily routine some attention
Keep the basics consistent. Brush gently twice a day and clean between your teeth daily. Choose a routine you enjoy enough to keep, and ask your dentist how to adapt it if you have persistent dryness, sensitivity or a higher cavity risk.
Make room for comfort. Sipping water and, when suitable, chewing sugar-free gum may help with dry-mouth symptoms. Notice foods or products that sting and discuss persistent irritation with your dentist. A pleasant routine matters; so does finding out why something hurts.

An everyday pleasure, thoughtfully chosen
Raspberry with a soft vanilla finish. A mint-free flavor. A familiar two-minute moment with a little more personality.
Dr. White’s FOR HER Menopause toothpaste, Serene Berry, was created with women navigating perimenopause and menopause in mind. Developed by Dr. Brigitte White, the fluoride-free formula includes nano-hydroxyapatite, chamomile extract, limonene and our Sensitivity Relief Complex™.
It is daily oral care, not a treatment for menopause, chronic pain or burning mouth syndrome. For persistent dryness or sensitivity, ask your dentist for care tailored to your mouth. Follow the product’s label directions.
Your care should make room for who you are now
You can appreciate a beautiful ritual and ask serious questions about your health. You can enjoy the confidence of knowing yourself and still want better information about what is changing.
This World Menopause Day, give your oral health a place in that conversation. Ask the question. Book the appointment. Choose the details that make caring for yourself feel personal.
